Glastonbury Girl power
2009-06-11
No not the re-relaunch of the Spice Girls, thank god although it would be amazing for sheer weirdness - imagine Posh in wellies? Anyway I digress. Was referring to the masses of girl singers currently peppering our ipods and download charts. Yes some of them (no names Lady GaGa) are horribly pretentious and manufactured, however there are some genuinely amazing ones, who are also some of my top picks for Glastonbury 2009. I will not be missing the absolutely legendary Florence and the Machine (who puts on the most amazingly gothic theatrical show apparently), Ladyhawke, Bat for Lashes, VV Brown and my sing along fave, Lily Allen (you know you do too so stop pretending). As they are also mega style mavens I shall also be sneaking festival styling tips from them to refine and perfect my look for the rest of the summers antics. Next stop Lovebox....

Massive Attack's Meltdown
2008-07-15
One festival you wont need your wellies for this summer is the Massive Attack Meltdown festival taking place at London's Southbank. Nine days of concerts, DJ sets, talks, films and visual art all chosen by Massive Attack.
I went up on Saturday night and was hypnotised by the United Visual Artists 'Volume' installation that consists of columns of scrolling light and sound that respond to the onlookers walking amongst them, so no performance is ever the same.
Most of the events are free. Check out the website.

Luella and Tonic Generation
2008-05-15
Tonic Generation say:
'What if your wallet or purse was an instrument of ethical decision-making? Or, to put it another way, what if you could spend your way towards a better world? Not just for you but for every living thing on our planet.'
But Tonic Generation also go one step further - and give you the opportunity to do just that whilst also getting to buy clothing you really genuinely want any way - such as their new great line of T Shirts under the fantastic 'Luella' range.
Luella Bartley (Whose London store has the most eccentric beautiful staff you've ever seen) has designed an exclusive range of four T's that not only are ecologically sourced, ethically produced but the proceeds of which go to help fund shoes for children in Haiti and set up educational programmes against Malaria and HIV for children in Africa.

PIMP MY MAC
2008-04-25
"ColorWare Inc., established in 2000, is an industry leader in altering the color of existing products. ColorWare began with the concept of transforming the ubiquitous beige computer into a custom-colored work of art." http://www.colorwarepc.com/
If you're a show-off or like my flatmate, who painstakingly matches her toenail poilish to her top in winter months when toes are wrapped up in socks all day, you can customise your mac or PSP to your hearts desire.
Or if you dream of a day when you can have such objects you can play and watch the nice colours change, it's quite satisfying.

guilty pleasures

dolly dearest...while i wish i didn't, i've always liked Made in America. Whats not funny about Ted Danson riding in a car with his best mate the singe as a passenger.

Dolly gets her knit on
2008-04-17
My favourite things in life are 80s Hair Metal and knitting.
Im making a scarf for Liz. Its the colour of Helmans mustard, Ive dropped loads of stitches, the stitches get stupidly tight then stupidly loose.
If anyone were to ask me how long Ive spent on said woolen marvel, Id have to say:
er... One weird film with Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley (who has been the same age his WHOLE life), 2 episodes of Scrubs, An AWFUL 90s film with Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson and the fabulous 'Strangers With Candy'.
I think I might watch too much Channel 5.
Anyway, get your knit on at 'Prick Your Finger' in East London.
This knitting shop is run by best friends Louise Harries and Rachael Matthews (Harries is a knitwear designer whos worked for Hoxton Boutique and Gucci - so you're in good company).
They run knitting classes, and make knitted replicas of baked bean tins and post pictures on their blog of their friend Stephen sleeping off a hangover in the shop window.

Electric Wood
2008-03-25
I found this yesterday when I was searching for something. The title got me intrigued>>"Wooden Mirror", i thought it would be some kind of projected mirror image on a plane of wood but it actually is lots of cubes that move to follow the person standing in front of this "mirror". When the light hits the changing angles of the wood it creates a pixelated moving picture. Just see, it's better explained in video than my tuesday morning garble.

... and Kate is a Japanese schoolgirl - or at least for the night.
Gin Panic's Tarantino-themed gig at the Black Gardenia was a riot of success. The theme was simple, come dressed as your favourite Tarantino character, the more obscure the better.
We had Gogo from Kill Bill, multiple Mia Wallaces from Pulp Fiction, a Vincent Vega and a pack of Reservoir Dogs.
I picked Patricia Arquette's character from True Romance, but ended up looking a bit more Bette Lynch than Alabama Worley.

Vampire Weekend On SNL
Yesterday, NY Times told us three-fourths-Brooklyn group Vampire Weekend is the breakout indie success of the year. Today, RedLasso clips their performance on last night's thoroughly dismal episode of Saturday Night Live. Below, "A-Punk" and "M79" from the condom endorsing fresh-scrubbed foursome, featuring a smiley as ever Ezra. At least someone enjoyed the show.
NY Times Profiles Brooklyn's Experimental (And Stylish) Indie Rockers
Stereogum's tag cloud hovers above The Paper Of Record today, with profiles on Brooklyn alt-rockers in Arts & Leisure and an indie rock dress-up cheat sheet in the Men Styles Magazine. Consider it a print version of the story run by MTV in January. "All Hail Brooklyn: Alt Rock Thrives In Alt-Borough" opens on the eve of Yeasayer's Late Night triumph (where they'd perform "2080," Conan's "favorite song in a long time") and highlights many of the notable musicians from our hood who are thriving on indie labels while the majors scramble. Battles are branded convoluted (but playful!) and Animal Collective claustrophobic (in a good way!) by writer Ben Sisaro; the "knotty technical complexity" he ascribes to arty acts like Battles/Grizzly Bear/Yeasayer make the prospect of listening to these New Bohemians seem like homework. The scene is so dense, even NME is sick of it ("It's gotten to the point where I had to stop constantly writing about Brooklyn," says editor Alex Miller). Yeasayer guitarist Anand Wilder sums it up in a silly sentence.
"You have these frat guys in Atlanta who are too sophisticated to listen to Creed and Nickelback, so they're like, 'Maybe I'll read this site Pitchfork and find out about this band Yeasayer or Dirty Projectors.'"
If you won't be able to catch the new buzz bin at SXSW next week, the
Times' Men Styles Magazine shows how you can at least dress the part: "Designers searching for indie cred need look no further than a Pitchfork review. Here, a few rising alt-rockers whose style is as distinctive as their sound."
Premature Evaluation: Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
Danger Mouse has somehow draped a blanket of Mr. Sandman drowsiness over The Odd Couple. It's not a boring album -- well, some of it is -- but there's a late-night a.m. radio haze to the whole thing, so that even the more uptempo bits like the proto Soul Train, Austin Powers-y first single "Run," hit like an old time, sepia-flaired party jam ... on opiates. No Harding Flash and Pattern Analyzer necessary. If you can keep your eyes open despite the muted, soothing tones of the production, there are some fine songs, shining moments. Everyone's going to want "Crazy," of course, but it's safe to say life would be fine if we never heard it again. Plus, we're happy to see Cee-Lo putting his soulful pipes to different uses and going elsewhere than St. Elsewhere. We're also glad, too, for some reason, that there isn't another Violent Femmes cover. (Somehow that just didn't age well.) Something like the lovely, downcast "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" sounds so old, it already feel sorta classic in a way that goes beyond retro. "Gettin' high because I feel so low..." Again, thanks Danger Mouse. Then there are 11 other tunes.
